Mumblings of an Engineer

get this from my friend's blog...a very good article...especially for a civil & structure engineer....

Mumblings of an Engineer

Oh...hari ini macam-macam perasaan ada...kecik ati ada...rasa nak marah pon ada...rasa down pon ada rasa demoralised pon ade...sabar ..sabar Ir. Ayu..

It seems that our team always being the easy target of blame...the guilty one by default ..

As I still have about 20++ years to work so if I get myself into trouble, I'm the one who's gonna face it for the next 20++ years..

If anything does go wrong...I dun want to be blamed... So better follows the rules by the books...There's no such thing as 'short cut' in achieving something especially when it involves safety...That's mean no compromise in matters of safety.

It seems that people never learn from past mistakes...

Quoting from a recent structural disaster's causes of failures as widely published in the media:-

1. Bahan dan kualiti hasil kerja yang tidak memenuhi spesifikasi;

2. Faktor reka bentuk yang tidak memadai;

3. Bumbung yang tidak dibina dengan sempurna;

4. Kawalan kualiti yang tidak dilaksanakan di tapak projek;

5. Pengawasan yang agak kurang ketika kerja-kerja pembinaan; selain

6. Kerja dilakukan secara tergesa-gesa turut menjejaskan kualiti s*******.

I especially dun like reason no.6 - kerja dilakukan secara tergesa-gesa ..bla bla..it seems to be going on and on and on and nobody cares...failure to plan is planning to fail as some says...

We are just doing our job...It is not easy doing the checking and all ...the headache is even more if doing the design and not many people want to be involved in this design stuff as it is very demanding and ties you down with liabilities. We always welcome people with great expertise to join us. Sadly not many people would like to take up this challenge as it is less glamorous and less powerful - why do you want to do complicated works and get blamed all the time when u can do a much easier job elsewhere with the same pay - as some says.

One of my lecturer used to say 'an engineer can become a manager but a manager cannot necessarily become an engineer'. I am proud to be an engineer and will always be...and I believe that an engineer should be an engineer first before anything else..

the truth is....value of 1 life is not just a life....strenghthen the structures due to safety for others...that is our job...make sure the safety of others....although it is not glamour...although it is not popular....there's only Allah that will pay our sincerity....insyaAllah...
